How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located near the transmission's edge over the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit challenging because there are two pins for the connector and they serve different purposes but the most effective method of testing it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is operating at its maximum. Look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed, i noticed a huge drop in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked in gasoline, and the 4th was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole, and when I start the engine without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump out. The fourth one remains closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I get 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is connected however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is 0.

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that has to know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injectors, etc. In order to do this it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28).
